The Green Paradise in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean region's charming green paradise, Sapadere Village, is situated 179 km from the capital of Turkish tourism, Antalya, and just 41 km away from one of the most beautiful holiday towns in Turkey, Alanya. From Alanya travel 2O km east, take a left turn off of the Alanya-Gazipasa-Mersin main road into Demirtas Village, pass through the Village and follow the signs until you arrive at Sapadere Village. Sapadere is an area where you can see all shades of green and is one of the most untouched spots with some of the richest flora and fauna in the region. Even someone who is not keen on a bus journey will not get bored from the Sapadere trip. It gives great pleasure to the human spirit to admire the green scenery as well as the smoking Taurus mountain range with snow on its peaks heading to the sky.

Because of the mild and rainy Mediterranean climate the region is mostly covered with pine trees. It is no surprise to see imposing oak and mulberry trees which makes silk culture common in the region. Mulberry leaves are the only leaves that silkworms will eat.

Sapadere Village is surrounded by the hills of the Taurus mountain complex known as Kiraz Mount, Tekne Mount, Ladin Mount, Yumru Mount, Incirkırı Mount by the natives.

Sapadere Village has scattered settlements. Village houses have large green gardens and wooden balconies with peaceful views and give a true example of simple village life. It is a great pleasure to visit one of the hospitable Villager’s homes and no doubt you will be offered a fresh sage tea! The Sedre stream having its source from the Taurus mountain range flows through the middle of the village. This stream is vital as it also provides the Villagers with clean, drinkable tap water. It is thought that Sapadere Village was found around 500 years ago by people escaping from the Crimean War and fleeing the Arabian Peninsula. It is one of the oldest villages in Alanya. According to the 2013 census the population is a mere 990. The inhabitant’s main livelihood is agriculture, stock-breeding and silk. After Sapadere Canyon opened to tourism the Villagers have started to reap some income from this avenue too. The Peanut is the most important agricultural crop. Beans and wheat are also grown. Herbal produce is made from the Sage, Thyme and daphne picked from the Taurus Mountains which is then sold by Villagers at local markets. Handcrafted silk products are also very common. Sapadere Village has one Mosque, an elementary school and a small hospital. In Sapadere Square there is a fully functioning old watermill and a half wooden tea cafe where you can also see the mechanical silk-weaving machines that took over from the handlooms in local houses.
